Special Needs Sports

Torrance Special Needs Sports

Eligibility: Athletes must have an intellectual disability and are 13 years old or older.

Athletes must be able and willing, to follow directions.
Athletes and their families must observe all Torrance Plunge rules. Failure to follow rules are grounds for dismissal from the aquatics program. Rules include no swimming under the bulkhead or hanging on lane dividers.
Athletes who have difficulty changing their clothes, must be accompanied by an adult of the same gender.
The program does not provide one on one training, or swim instruction. Weak swimmers must show progress in becoming self sufficient and less dependent on constant prompting by coaches.

The Torrance Special Needs Program is swim program that promotes health and fitness through lap swim and preparation for competitions.

All program participants must have prior permission from the City of Torrance Special Needs Recreation Program Coordinator. Permission will not be granted at poolside.

Participation is limited. When openings occur priority will be given to existing Torrance Special Needs athletes, then new athletes who are Torrance residents, followed by non residents.
Participation in Cycling and Aquatics Lap Swim will require prior approval from the City of Torrance Program Coordinator, Phil Duthie.

These sports are conditioning activities and are not geared towards competition. Aquatic Lap Swimmers must be able to swim 50 meters continuously unassisted. No swim lessons are provided.

Summer Fun Sports guidelines

The City of Torrance Community Services Department is offering Summer Fun Sports as a drop-in sports program for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Fun competition will be provided on a first come bases for the following sports: Flag Football and Softball, will start on alternating Tuesday nights at McMaster Park starting in July.

Soccer

Soccer will be Saturday afternoons at Wilson Park starting in July. We will play Tennis on Sunday afternoons at Wilson Park starting in July . Players and volunteers will be placed on teams created each session for the purpose of providing safe and fair competition.

The Torrance Special Needs Sports Registration Form must be filled out prior to participation, if the participant is not currently a PALS or STAR participant.

Torrance Special Needs Sports Activities is sponsored by the City of Torrance, Community Services Department, Recreation Division.

In order to participate athletes must demonstrate the ability to follow directions and be able to participate in a safe manner.
